Fisheries of Lake Victoria

BY SEBASTIAN LINDSTROM AND PHILIPPA YOUNG

We recently produced a 30-minute documentary for UNDP on the effects of climate change on Lake Victoria, a natural resource that millions of people across Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya depend on. This project took us to many small fishing communities and to the local projects that are fighting against the odds to protect soils, plant trees, convert people to green energy, and maintain food security. These champions are up against political influence, industrial pollution, lack of agency in affected populations and growing risk factors for fishing and farming livelihoods. The aim of the project was to inform local communities and provoke a sense of urgency among regional policy-makers.
