23rd to 27th June 2008
During our 4 days in Marrakesh we have been working with Hakim at the Atfalouna association that provides shelter and support to the street children of Marrakesh. In early 2003 Hakim was roaming Marrakesh’s famous square Djemaa el-Fna at night to locate the street children who needed a helping hand. He slowly built up trust among the children and was approached by a man from the French organization Groupe Développement. They wanted to give Hakim funding to organize a place for the children and the Atfalouna association was created.
Half of the team slept at the roof of the association in tents while the others received accommodation by Meryanne and Dr. Gary J. Martin; the owner of Jnane Tamsna. Dr Martin is the director of the Global Diversity Foundation.
We are currently covering the music festival in Essaouira, located 3 hours west of Marrakesh.
On Monday we will head south to work with various Human rights activists and late next week we will enter Mauritania’s capital Nouakchott who was struck last Tuesday by the Al-Qaida assassination of an American aid worker.
See how we arrived in Marrakesh before we worked with the local street children and which other NGOs we will capture on video along our journey.
