Press Release: AFRICAN QUEST – Marrakesh to Jo’burg in aid of community-based NGOs

On June the 23rd 2009 a group of young travelers from around the world will begin a North –South crossing of the African continent using public transport, just like local people do. Their quest is to search for people who are making a difference to young people in need. Our aim is to connect and unite grass-root NGOs and through our expedition and movement to pool skills, experiences and knowledge to aid the NGOs that we support.

We will discover, document, deliver and be inspired by more than 20 small grassroot NGOs across Africa. DISCOVER – Sleeping, eating and talking with the communities we will experience the issues they face and get to know the people. DOCUMENT – Their stories will be recorded online, on video and in diaries distributed LIVE through local and international media platforms. DELIVER – Specific community projects can be reviewed by experts in humanitarian and sustainable development. INSPIRE – We hope our journey will inspire innovative ideas in the field and among NGOs. Ultimately we wish to be inspirational for people to travel with the community in mind.

Marrakesh, Morocco, to Johannesburg, South Africa, will take us over 2 months. Key members of our expedition team include Evan Fowler, the CEO of Hong Kong based Mirror Productions striving to promote greater awareness of pressing social and environmental issues, Alica Sully, an ex-Peace Corps volunteer working as a full-time movie Maker with several successful productions from the developed and developing world, and Sebastian Lindstrom who has many years of African experience running a grassroots NGO in Ghana supporting HIV positive children.
